“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” – Nelson Mandela

The Soul of a Society

I read a funny article about how parents have always been concerned about their children getting into the wrong company and turning wayward. However, in our society, many parents unknowingly got themselves into the ‘wrong’ company and became infected by the “fear of losing out” and went into the vicious cycle of enrolling their children into countless enrichment classes. The article pointed out that for children to lead such a childhood, shuttling from classes to classes would not leave them time to think, reflect and dream. What truth!

If we constantly subject our children and youths in an environment of structures, frameworks and curriculum at the time when they are supposed to be most imaginative and liberated, are we then developing their minds at the expense of their souls?

Every idea begins with a thought or a desire to create solutions. If we do not make for our children to think and reflect, then we are not making space for our society to have innovation, breakthroughs, designers, artists and all kinds! Afterall, Isaac Newton discovered the rule of gravity when he was relaxing under an apple tree!
